Haneda airport’s renovated domestic terminal opens for business

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Haneda airport’s expanded domestic terminal building opened for business on Wednesday with a ceremony after almost doubling its original lobby space in a renovation.

The terminal serves domestic flights by All Nippon Airways Co., Hokkaido International Airlines Co., also known as Air Do, Skynet Asia Airways Co. and other airlines. In its dining area, more than 260 chairs and tables collected from around the world are on display.

Japan Airport Terminal Co., the operator of the airport, spent about 19 billion yen extending the existing terminal building to the south.

The six-story building with two basement levels comes with ANA lounges on its third and fourth floors. The chairs are being placed on the third level where passengers can eat at restaurants serving international cuisine. Also on display on that level are artifacts from the Eisei-Bunko Museum, which keeps treasures of the Hosokawa clan, the ruler of the Kumamoto domain in feudal Japan.

An observation deck on the fifth floor has about 4,000 built-in light-emitting-diode bulbs for visitors to enjoy with night views.

A new international terminal will open at Haneda airport on Oct. 21.
